Find Your Balance: Paul's Story
From City drinking culture to marathon training, Paul's approach to alcohol has evolved over the years.
From City drinking culture to marathon training, Paul's approach to alcohol has evolved over the years.
As Paul approaches 50, looking after his health has become more important than ever. Running has become a key part of his lifestyle and is one of the reasons he has reflected on his relationship with alcohol. Rather than giving up drinking completely, Paul's goal has been to find a healthier balance.
Paul recognises that drinking was once a much bigger part of his life. During his 20s and 30s, he worked in the City, where alcohol was deeply embedded in workplace culture.
Over time, however, his perspective changed. As he became more focused on his health, family and setting a positive example for his children, he started to think differently about alcohol.
During the six weeks we followed him, Paul adopted a number of simple strategies to help keep his drinking in check, including opting out of rounds, alternating alcoholic and alcohol-free drinks, and choosing 0% beers when out with friends.
For Paul, the goal is simple: maintaining control, enjoying social occasions, and continuing to prioritise the active, healthy lifestyle that matters most to him.
"I'm enjoying drinking more now because I drink less, I see it as a treat."
Today, alcohol plays a much smaller role in his life. Paul still enjoys socialising and will occasionally have drinks with friends, but usually only on special occasions. He is highly conscious of the impact alcohol can have on his running and recovery.
Far from feeling like he's missing out, Paul says drinking less has actually made him enjoy alcohol more. Because it is no longer a regular habit, it feels more like a treat when he does choose to have a drink. He is proud of the discipline he has shown and feels more in control of his choices.
As he became more conscious of the impact alcohol could have on his running and recovery, he found new ways to stay social while drinking less. Learn more about how alcohol can affect your fitness goals.
